About Torquay
Torquay is beautiful town with many attractions including Kents Cavern, which is one of Britain's most important Stone Age sites. Early man lived here for over 700,000 years. The floor is stratified with remains showing prehistoric coexistence of now-extinct animals and humans. Between 1825-20 Rev. J. McEnery explored the cave and proposed the coexistence theory. The cave was then extensively explored from 1865 to 1880 by William Pengelly, who found evidence to prove McEnery's hypothesis. The caves have had many famous visitors in cluding Beatrix Potter, Agatha Christie, King George V and Haile Selassie. Selassie was so impressed that he Leslie Powe, his guide a gold sovereign in thanks.
