Keeping Your Local Area Clean

Filthy and disgusting-not the sort of words that would make you want to visit a town are they? But unfortunately they were the words used to describe Northampton in a report recently. Although Northampton is highlighted in that one report, sadly dirty litter strewn streets are also commonplace in many other UK towns and cities too.

I'm sure that just like other city council budgets Northampton's is stretched just as much and they will say they do not have the money to spend on cleaning the streets as often as they should, so why don't they look at tackling the cause of the problem.
•    Are there any consequences for people who drop litter?
•    Are there plenty of bins in public areas?
•    Who polices the problem?

Consequences
What about educating young people from an early age on how littering damages their local area and the health issues it can cause. How the area will suffer financially if it continues-after all, less visitors will mean retailers will suffer which will lead to loss of jobs and possible closure. And dirty towns and cities are not somewhere that's likely to receive investment for future development.
Then there are the consequences for the individual who is guilty of littering. Fines should be imposed for those found littering, or community work should be imposed. The best type of community work should be cleaning the streets of the mess they've helped to create.

Public bins
A very high percentage of litter on the streets is made up of empty food cartons, take away wrappers and beer bottles. Town and city centres need to increase the number of litter bins in these areas and make sure they are emptied more frequently.

Policing the problem
More police on the beat would help as they are the only ones who would be able to arrest or reprimand people for littering when seen doing it. But businesses can also help here by providing bins outside their premises for customers to use.
Maybe if people were told the reason their council tax was increasing was to pay for street cleaning they would think twice before dropping rubbish whenever they felt like it. And if those on benefits who don't pay council tax had their benefit cut in order to pay for the clean ups then maybe people's attitude to littering would change.
