Hygiene cuts cost NHS more than just ill health
When admitted to hospital most people would expect their condition to get better, so when I read news reports like this one it makes me very concerned. Apparently, due to poor hygiene on the wards, hospital-acquired infections have doubled in just two years. This increase in hospital acquired infections is costing the NHS millions, millions that the taxpayer will end up bearing the brunt of:
·The amount of compensation the NHS paid out to people who contracted a disease whilst in hospital last year reached £6 million
·Patients that catch an infection whilst in hospital will remain a patient for much longer which means more medication and care will be needed
Any medical environment, be it a doctors clinic, a dentist surgery or a hospital should have a cleaning regime in place that doesn't have any margins for error. Corners cannot afford to be cut regardless of what budgets they are working to. As the figures above show it can end up costing the NHS a whole lot more.
Hospital floor specifications require that the surface of resin flooring does not promote bacteria or fungal growth. Other requirements may include non-slip floor surfaces, acoustic damping for quiet areas, and flooring resistant to electrostatic discharge. Carpets need to be stain and bleach resistant, have anti-bacterial properties and be easy to maintain.
