They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover as the content may be excellent, even if the first thing you see doesn't look that good. However, when it comes to an impression of your business, the first thing potential clients see is really important and does matter.

Imagine this scenario. Your company is expecting a visit from a potential new client. The office looks clean and tidy, your staff look professional and you are well prepared.

The client pulls into the car park and the first thing he sees are employees having a cigarette outside and throwing their cigarette butts on the floor. He enters the building and proceeds down the corridor to your office. This may not be a very long corridor but when the floors are dirty the short walk will be long enough for him to establish an opinion of the business he is about to meet. Now what sort of opinion will this be?

The décor may be nice in the building, but when there are areas not kept clean it could give the impression that attention to detail is not important to the business.

Remember that how your office looks is almost as important as how well it functions.

If you rent office space in a business centre and public areas, washrooms, receptions and corridors are not kept clean on a daily basis you should be speaking to the building managers or landlords as they have a responsibility to the businesses that rent their office space. And whilst smoking is not allowed in workplaces there should be cigarette bins provided outside for disposing of cigarette ends.
