Commercial cleaning-Don't cut corners
There are clear health and safety guidelines that businesses must follow in order to prevent accidents and bacteria spreading on their premises. Yet despite this there are still hundreds of accidents and cases of illness being caused through poor cleaning regimes in many commercial and industrial premises each year. Not only is it costing businesses dearly in compensation claim payouts but also costs them in production when staff are off work ill through something that could easily have been prevented.
Quite often commercial and industrial environments get much less attention when it comes to cleaning than the home environment does. Busy shopping malls that have thousands of visitors a day are still sometimes seen with wet floors during opening hours, an accident waiting to happen. And as for hygiene, desks have been proven to carry more germs than a toilet seat. When you then consider that these employees will then go on to touch door handles, telephones and other equipment it's easy to see how germs can spread very quickly in the workplace. Then there's what's being brought into the workplace. Researchers at a university in Arizona Researchers, in conjunction with a major shoe corporation, conducted a study to find out what health-threatening germs are carried unknowingly on your shoes.
The results are frightening, and are not something that can be just wiped off on the doormat before entering a building.
- Escherichia coli (E Coli) causes symptoms ranging from severe stomach pain accompanied by diarrhoea to kidney failure and potential death in 1 out of 50 victims. The common occurrence (96%) of coliform and E Coli bacteria on the outside of the shoes indicates frequent contact with fecal material, which most likely originates from floors in public toilets, or contact with animal fecal material outdoors
- Klebsiella pneumonia - a gram-negative bacteria that can rapidly destroy lung tissue and in 25 to 50% of patients will cause death.
- Serratia ficaria - causing gallbladder empyemas and sepsis as well as biliary infections.
Most strikingly, the study found that the transfer rate of bacteria from the shoes to uncontaminated tiles ranged from 90% to 99%. Given that a lot of flooring includes porous wood and carpet, direct transmission is virtually certain.
The importance of regular cleaning is clear; professional cleaning equipment used on a regular basis will significantly reduce these risks and make the environment a safer place to be.
